Ganesh Chaturthi 2014: Varan Bhaat recipe

dal riceIngredients


1 crater arhar or tuvar dal/pigeon pea lentils


2.5 cups H2O for vigour cooking a lentils


2 middle tomatoes, chopped


¼ tsp turmeric powder


salt as required


For tempering:


½ tsp mustard seeds


½ cumin seeds


a splash of asafeotida (optional)


2 tbsp coconut grated


1 immature chili, slit


10-12 curry leaves


1 tbsp chopped coriander leaves for garnish


1.5 tbsp ghee


For a bhaat or steamed rice:


1.5 cups rice


2.5 to 3 cups H2O for vigour cooking


Salt as compulsory (optional)


Method for a varan:


  1. Rinse a lentils good in water.

  2. Pressure prepare a lentils with tomatoes and turmeric powder for 7-8 whistles on middle to high flame.

  3. When a pressures settle down on a own, open a lid and crush a dal with a connected drive or wooden spoon.

  4. Add 1 crater H2O and salt.

  5. Keep simmering on low fire compartment we get a preferred consistency, that is conjunction thick nor skinny and gripping it aside.

  6. Heat ghee in a pan.

  7. Pop a mustard seeds first.

  8. Then supplement a cumin and burst them.

  9. Add a asafoetida, curry leaves and immature chilies.

  11. Pour a whole tempering in a dal.

  12. Cover and let a tempering flavors interpose with a dal for about 5-6 minutes.

  13. Garnish varan bhaat with coriander leaves and grated coconut.

  14. Serve varan bhaat prohibited with steamed rice.

Method for a bhaat or steamed rice:


  1. Wash and Soak a rice for 20-30 mins.

  2. Drain and afterwards vigour prepare a rice with 2.5 to 3 cups H2O for 2-3 whistles.

Serve a bhaat or steamed rice with a varan.
